I was born into a polygamous family; the last of seven. I have a half-sister a year older than me, which means I was born not long after things stopped being normal.
And so the ab-normal became my normal.
There was always some element of tension in the air. Perhaps in recognition of this, every time we went to the village to visit, my paternal grandmother would break into a welcoming song.
She had a special one for me :
Oninnuolayi Oladapo; O ninnu e (Literary meaning- Dapo has a right to this wealth)
She would repeat this over and over.
I considered her a funny old lady and never gave her actions much thought,
Or so I thought.
Grandma passed away over 30 years ago. Recently when I had to register a company name, without hesitation, my grandmother’s song came back to me.
And when my puzzled bank manager asked me what my “unusual” company name meant I smiled and told him it means “I have a right to be here”!
