I’ve lived in my current home for 8 years now. I have a small lawn hedged all around by Wisteria, Roses, Purple Butterfly bush, Tulips, and a few other plants. The previous owner was the keen gardener, not myself.
Every so often, I’d get the mower and the hedge trimmer out to keep it looking marginally tidy, (and yes, neighbours passing by seeing me looking determined with hedge trimmer in hand take the opportunity to make the odd Dentist joke).
On finishing this, I’d put on heavy duty gloves and wrench out any weeds I could find by the roots. One in particular was my pet peeve!
It was more of a bramble than a weed. Spiky and tough. It climbs on and grows over and around everything. To make matters worse, it’s so deeply rooted that try as I may, I never could get the whole thing out of the ground.
So we have this tussle every spring/summer and have done for the last 8 years till last summer.
My neighbour’s garden immaculate as always was starting to show up the tawdriness of mine, so I got out the usual kit. When I got to removing the weeds this time however, I came upon a surprise.
Two blackberries, hanging from what I’d considered a weed for so long. I squealed as I ran in to tell my children and in that moment what had been to me, an object of scorn became a source of delight.
Perspective – it’s amazing, isn’t it!
