I turned 44 this year and it has been the happiest year of my life!
It all started with an email from Kate…
Kate had been my patient for a number of years and last Christmas, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The emails exchanged between us had a profound effect on me.
Following Kate’s passing, my team and I had a discussion on what really matters. We decided that as a practice, Our focus was going to be on Joy!
The team was going to do their best to make patients happy; I in turn would do my best to make my team happy.
I used to think that Joy was a soft goal for people with no aspirations: I now know better.
Joy arises from a deep feeling of belonging and contentment. It does not deny the existence of negative occurrences, but because its source reaches deep, Joy gives meaning to Life.
I once read that
“The quest of the Ego is “What’s in it for me?
But the desire of the Spirit is “How may I serve?”
It appears this is true of happiness too. In deciding to make the people around me happier, I became happier too and was able to find a nugget of bliss even in most unfortunate circumstances.
It has been my happiest year so far and I’m filled with gratitude for all who have made it so- with their words, their cards, or even just a gentle smile.
Thank you Kate.
